    I’m having a huge issue trying to organize my process so that I can hire and expand. Any freelancers had success with this? Which tasks did you outsource first? How did you get everything out of your head for someone else to be able to handle?

    Hi @melissa, You can start by looking at consistent processes – I’m not sure what range of services you offer, but if you find yourself doing things over an over for each client those activities are good places to start. Also things that are more administrative in nature are good targets for automation or outsourcing. They tend to be less expensive than outsourcing things like, say, content creation. As someone who’s done a fair amount of hiring, I’d also recommend entering into each initial relationship with a backup plan – know that it might not work out, that you might lose some money in the process.

      Hahah yes. I’m realizing that I actually really dislike the process of defining my processes and creating my checklists. I can’t figure out why but it reminds me of when I had to write papers for school. Can I delegate defining my processes and creating checklists?

    @johndill I think I’m stuck at figuring out the process part. As a freelancer I kind of just know what work is there and get it done but the process hasn’t been so formal. Any tips for making this more formal? Did you use some sort of software or how did you get organized?

    I think a good way to think of it is that you want your time to be as billable as possible for as high a rate as possible. Any activities that don’t drive value back to your business should be automated/outsourced so that you can spend the most time on max billing rate work. Work from the bottom up.

    Different types of businesses have different needs. If you get the balance you need and have long-term stability that’s great. In my experience in commercial/creative services you need to have some growth in order to get any kind of balance. It’s hard to do the work, be the accountant, chase outstanding invoices, work up new pitches, maintain gear, manage accounts etc. etc.
